Our Program

The program runs year around and is multi-faceted: in the summer, staff work with students daily in skill-building workshops, followed by a mentored work experience where the student is placed in a job with one of our partner employers. During the school year, S2C provides an after-school academic enhancement program and a mentored work experience. The program has proven success in increasing the academic performance and career readiness for program participants, while also helping them refine skills such as goal-setting, organization, decision-making, resume-writing, and interviewing.

S2C partners with Pittsburgh Public Schools and various community groups for recruitment, UPMC for job placement and shadowing opportunities, the University of Pittsburgh for tutoring, and Carlow University/ Sisters of Mercy for facilities. In partnership with OPDC’s long standing job development program, JobLinks, S2C boasts a 100% graduation rate and 99% college attendance rate after graduation.

To be eligible for S2C, students must meet all of the following criteria:

  • 2.5 Grade Point Average
  • 9th-12th grade student enrolled in a traditional public or private school
  • City of Pittsburgh resident, with priority for residents of Oakland, the Hill District and Uptown
  • Work permit from Board of Education required for all participants under the age of 18
  • Income guidelines

OPDC’s School 2 Career youth program is supported by McAuley Ministries, the grantmaking arm of the Pittsburgh Mercy Health System, and the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit Program with investment from Dollar Bank, PNC Bank, and UPMC Health Plan.
